Kathmandu: The then King Birendra Shah’s private residential home, Shree Sadan has been opened for the general public since Sunday.
The Shree Sadan located inside the Narayanhiti palace museum has been opened for observation. Before the macabre royal massacre, the then King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and prince Nirajan Bir Bikram Shah had been residing at Shreesadan.

The special place was shut following the massacre of King Birendra’s dynasty on 1 June 2001. This was the most popular and devastating human-made incident in the history of modern Nepal.

The Narayanhiti palace museum and republic monument management and operation committee has opened the exhibition chamber of Shreesadan allowing the general public for observation.
Inaugurating the exhibition room of Shree Sadan Saturday, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Yogesh Kumar Bhattarai said the Narayanhiti museum would be established as a prime destination site which would help visitors understand monarchy and especially the history of modern Nepal.
Noting that the progressive role of the monarchy in the unification of modern Nepal was indelible, minister Bhattarai said the history from Prithvi Narayan to Gyanendra Shah has been reflected in the Narayanhiti area.

It is said that Shri Sadan was designed by King Birendra. Built-in 2023 BS, the three-story building has 12 rooms. On the ground floor was the private office of the then King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya. The kitchen, dining room, wine bar and restroom are also on the ground floor.

The then Prince Dipendra also lived on the ground floor. Dipendra had moved from Shri Sadan to Tribhuvan Sadan as per the rules of separation after reaching age. Then his room was empty.

On the first floor of Shri Sadan are King Birendra’s bedroom and Queen Aishwarya’s room. Rani Aishwarya’s room has a television, song cassettes and cassette player she watches.
