Kathmandu. Foreign airlines will now be able to use telecommunication services (Internet Facility) while flying in the Nepali sky. The Nepal Telecommunications Authority, in coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, is about to allow foreign airlines to use the service in the sky.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Telecommunications Authority (NTA) held on April 25. Foreign airlines will be able to use the internet and mobile phones in Nepali skies.
NTA spokesperson Santosh Poudel informed that the NTA has decided to allow the use of the service at an altitude of 10,000 feet if requested by a foreign airline.
According to him, airlines licensed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will get the facility. NTA will allow the service to be provided based on the permission of ICAO. The NTA has stated that the facility has been provided on the speculations that allowing the operation of internet service at an altitude of fewer than 10,000 feet may disrupt the frequency within Nepal.
Three foreign airlines had applied to NTA for the operation of sky internet service. Based on the demand of the foreign company, the NTA has decided to allow the operation of the service from the board meeting after discussing with the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, Ministry of Communications, and other agencies.
Earlier, India and Afghanistan had been providing internet service in the sky above 10,000 feet. After these two countries, Nepal has become the third country in South Asia to provide telecommunication services in the sky.
Recently, three foreign airline companies had asked Nepal for such permission.(RSS)
